The story behind Buena Vista Social Club has made them an incredibly well respected collection of musicians. When their first album was released it proved such a success that it sparked an international revival in traditional Latin American music. The Buena Vista Social Club was originially a members only club in Havana open during the 1940s. The club became a popular location where many musicians could come to meet and play. 50 years later a project of Ry Cooder and Cuban musician Juan de Marcos González brought together several people, some of them musicians who originally played at the club, to record an album inspired by its history. The groups concerts in Amsterdam and New York became the subject of a documentary film my director Wim Wenders. The film Buena Vista Social Club was released in 1999 and catapulted the project to international acclaim.
Despite the deaths of many of the original Buena Vista Social Club musicians, the surviving members still continue to tour the world with several other guest musicians. Their concerts are an amazing display of Cuban music and for many is an introduction to a whole new world styles and sounds. Although its line-up changes all the time, the Buena Vista Social Club still continues its long standing history of bringing a collective of musicians together to perform.
It is amazing to think that some of these musicians have been playing together since the 1950s. The group however are still as enthusiastic as ever to bring Cuban music around the world. The history of the collective and the style of music they create still sells out venues wherever they play. It’s no surprise that Buena Vista Social Club tickets are so popular for fans but don’t worry about missing your chance to see them live. We’ve gone through a selection of places where you can still get your tickets so you can be there.
