Celebrating the centenary of playwright Terence Rattigan’s birth The Old Vic are showing his final work Cause Celebre. Rattigan was one of Britain’s most highly regarded dramatists, notable for works such as The Winslow Boy and The Browning Version, and is this year will see many of his plays performed across the country.
Cause Celebre is based on the true story of Alma Rattenbury who, together with her 18 year old lover, were trialled for the murder of her husband in 1935. Alma was acquitted of murder but her lover, George Stoner, was found guilty and sentenced to death. Rattigan’s play examines the role of passion and loyalty whilst exposing English social and sexual values.
The cast includes Niamh Cusack and Anne-Marie Duff in the leading roles alongside Freddie Fox, Jenny Galloway (winner of the Lawrence Olivier award), Nicholas Jones and Patrick Godfrey. Directing the play is Thea Sharrock who, as well as directing Rattigan’s ‘After The Dance’ in 2010, has gained recognition for much of her work across the West End.
Cause Celebre at The Old Vic will be one of the highlights of a terrific centenary celebration for a legendary figure amongst British playwrights. Running from March to June Cause Celebre is certainly going to be one of the highlights of the theatre calendar for the Spring.
