The popularity of this Portland folk unit has blossomed hugely since rising to prominence in 2008 with the release of their second EP and self-titled full length. Drawing upon influences from Bob Dylan, Neil Young and Brian Wilson, the band also infuse their own element of gifted songwriting and soothing vocal harmonies. The group came about after singer Robin Pecknold and lead guitarist Skyler Skjelset met at high school and started writing and playing music together. After playing several shows in and around Portland, Oregon, almost completely by word of mouth, Fleet Foxes began to build up a great reputation. The band’s folk style, which they describe as “baroque harmonic pop jams” quickly caught on and after much success with their music online on platforms such as MySpace they were offered a recording deal with Sub Pop records in early 2008.
Few bands nowadays have the ability to gain so much attention and respect for their song writing so early on in their careers. After their first LP was given almost unanimous thumbs up from very happy and impressed music journalist across the globe the band were met with similar enthusiasm from fans towards their tour announcements. Fleet Foxes tickets were selling out in pretty much every country they travelled to. The Fleet Foxes concert experience is one of those that fires an endless stream of different emotions at the audience. From anthemic joy and pleasant astonishment to hushed repose, concert goers are left with a definite sense of experience.
With the release of their forthcoming second album planned for May 2011 the Fleet Foxes will be back on the road with a tour of the U.K. added to their already predominantly sold out North America tour. One thing is clear: Anticipation for this album is huge and, as their first was in 2008, there are expectations for this to be one of the big records of 2011.
