Grease

Grease would be for many the most famous musical of all time. Its slick hairstyles, classic 50s Rock and Roll image and infectious tunes have made it worthy of having this title. Although it had been running on Broadway for several years it was perhaps not until its release in 1978 as a film starring John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John that it became a world wide hit. Since then it has become a firm favourite both on stage and on the screen.

Grease is the story of “bad boy” Danny who meets Sandy whilst on summer vacation. Back at school Danny is quick to boast about his ‘summer loving’ with his friends the ‘T-Birds’ gang. After it turns out that Sandy has joined the school and becomes a member of the ‘Pink Ladies’ Danny soon ruins everything when he turns the cold shoulder whilst trying to act cool in front of his friends and must change his ways in order to win back Sandy. Originally written by Jim Jacobs and Warren Casey, the musical tells of adolescence, love, friendship and rebellion and opened on Broadway in 1972. Since then it has been cemented in history as one of the most successful theatre productions in modern times.

In 2007 the show was revived and took to the stage at the Piccadilly Theatre in London and is now the longest running play in the theatre’s history. Grease is one of the ultimate ‘feel-good’ musicals and has rightly so enjoyed a longevity which has made it popular across generations. Perfect for watching with the family or with friends, Grease’s catchy songs and contagious essence of youth have given it the popularity it still has today. The musical will only be running at the Piccadilly Theatre until the end of April 2011 so do not miss this last opportunity to catch it!
