Love Never Dies is the sequel (that is not a sequel) to the Phantom of the Opera – possibly the most renown musical of all time. Love Never Dies features music and writing by stage legend Andrew Lloyd Webber as well as material from Glenn Slater and popular British author Ben Elton. Andrew Llyod Webber has maintained that although Love Never Dies is set roughly ten years after the events of the original Phantom of the Opera, and includes the same same characters, it is in fact a stand-alone piece that should be viewed separately. The plot catches up with an invitation for Christine Daaé to play a show in Brooklyn New York by a mysterious impresario. She travels to the borough with her husband and son only to realize that she has been lured there by the Phantom himself.
Love Never Dies is indeed a labour of love of Webber himself. He began work on the musical in 1990, but naturally his many other smash projects got in the way and he often had to put the project on hold. As is the case with many passion projects. The work is very personal to Webber and he asks that the audience surrender some of their pre-notions of what a musical featuring the Phantom should be like. But in the end it is all worth it, as this musical could be slightly ahead of its time, and one day carve out a niche as a new masterpiece of British theatre.
